Would you kill a Poisonous snake ( Copperhead ) If it was near your house?

This morning on my way to work, there was a Copperhead sitting directly outside my front door. Fully grown about 3 ft long. Copperheads are 1 of 5 venomous snakes in Ga. Should I have left it alone? I have a dog, and I was worried about the dog so i hit it with a shovel and threw it in the woods. It was not dead, i just stunned it really hard.
