Is being a zoologist an actual job?

What I mean is, if you asked someone who claims to be one and they say, "I'm a zoologist", is that an actual job? I want to be something like that when I'm older. Also, how would you get a job as one? Do you just go to a laboratory and ask to do an interview? Answers would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.
