Nurse or medical laboratory technologist?

im currently a nursing student who didnt get into the nursing program i planned for and not sure what to do. im going to continue to try to be a nurse but i have to be realistic. nursing school is extremely competitive (i have an 3.9gpa). i was thinking of becoming a medical laboratory technologist and wondering can anyone really tell me want its like. not a text book definition.
