What is the role of medical technologists in clinical chemistry in the laboratory?
The medical technologist working in the Chemistry department will run tests having to do with medical chemistry. The med tech working in this department will run tests such as electrolytes, lipid screenings, enzyme assays, proteins, and possibly some point of care testing. Because the chemistry section is the most automated area of the medical lab usually this person will also take care of the quality control in the lab and some go on to become experts with the lab machines. Chemistry department also handles blood gases, hormone testing, therapeutic drug monitoring, and possibly toxicology if the lab does not have a separate section for that. It is very interesting but you have to like working with machines. Sometimes the other departments jokingly look down on chemistry people because they "push buttons" all day but that's really not true you have to understand what you are doing and how to interpret the data.
